Hiring Range: $17.36 - $20.40 Per Hour
Full Range: $17.36 - $23.44 Per Hour

Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.

Safeguards the lives of persons at a swimming pool and teaches swimming. This classification is distinguished from the Lifeguard I classification by its additional responsibilities for teaching swimming. It is distinguished from the Lifeguard III classification which has additional supervisory responsibilities for lifeguards and other recreation personnel.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)

Conducts swimming lessons in accordance with the Starfish Aquatics Institute methods and procedures;

Oversees activities at a swimming pool;

Rescues swimmers who are in danger of drowning;

Administers first aid including Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR);

Assists in enforcing sanitation rules and regulations at pools;

Maintains pool sanitation;

Tests pool water for chemical balance;

May supervise pool in absence of manager.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Knowledge of:

  • lifesaving and swimming instruction principles and practices;
  • first aid.

Skill in:
  • performing lifesaving functions including rescue and CPR;
  • teaching swimming and lifesaving methods;
  • enforcing regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially;
  • preventing dangerous situations from arising, recognizing emergencies, and taking necessary action;
  • maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications

Completion of American Red Cross lifeguarding and either Starfish Aquatics Institute-Starfish Swimming certification (SSI) or American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction (WSI).

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: When only American Red Cross WSI certification is held, then Starfish Aquatics Institute-Starfish Swimming certification (SSI) is required within six months of appointment. First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR for the Professional Rescuer must be included as part of the lifeguard certification. Some positions require a Pool Operator license at the time of application or within six months of appointment. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure/certification/registration shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, or older at time of application and must be 16 years of age on or before date of appointment. As a condition of employment or continued employment, positions within this classification may be required to submit to a criminal history background check with state and federal agencies pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1750 and Public Law 92-544.
